Health Guidelines

  1. Three registered nurses are employed by the school, one is present during the school day in the lower school building and one in the upper school building. Their duties include overseeing the clinic, caring for illness and injuries during the school day, and maintaining health records of all students. The clinics provide a place where care can be given to students who become ill or injured during the school day.
  2. We rely on our parents as the first step in preventing infection in the school environment. We count on them to use good judgment in protecting our school community. A sick child should not be in school but should remain at home in an environment where proper care may be given.
  3. If a student asks to go home, the student will be released only with permission from the parent/guardian or from a person designated as an emergency contact. A student who presents at school with symptoms of an illness and/or is unable to participate in the day’s activities will be removed from the classroom and the parents, or an emergency contact if the parents cannot be reached, will be contacted.
  4. Students must be picked up within the hour of the school’s request that the child be sent home due to illness. The student should be signed out by the clinic. Teachers will be informed of the student’s dismissal for illness.
  5. Students cannot be sent to school if they have had any of the following within the previous 24 hours:
    • Fever >100.0 (unmedicated)
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Excessive coughing
    • Excessive nasal drainage
  6. A student who experiences vomiting or diarrhea at school, or for whom the teacher feels has excessive coughing or nasal drainage, will be asked to go home and should not return to school until he/she has not experienced these symptoms for 24 hours without assistance of medication. A student who has a temperature over 100.0 during the school day will be isolated and sent home.
  7. Parents/guardians submit student medical information during enrollment when a student is first enrolled at the school. Parents/guardians should update a student’s medical information in FACTS whenever a student has changes in relevant health history or any changes in medication. Parents are also responsible for informing the school nurse of any changes in their child’s behavior, family dynamics, or other factors that may affect their child’s well-being during the school day. In addition, parents must immediately contact the school nurse or division director about behavior, comments, or other concerns that potentially evidence that their child could harm himself or any other individual.
  8. Emergency contacts should be someone local who can pick up a child, if needed, in the event a parent is unable to do so.
  9. See Medication Policy for the school’s guidelines for administering medication to a student at school.
